In May 2026, an important, unprecedented event took place at Fort Carson, Colorado: US Army Operation Jailbreak. For the first time, roughly 600 participants from more than 50 companies came together in person to integrate their sensors and systems into a common Command and Control (C2) platform, exposing and documenting APIs across more than 70 Army capabilities, including the Integrated Battle Command System Maneuver (IBCS-M) program.

This ambitious effort was created to address the urgent and growing need for US and allied forces to communicate with greater ease, share information at speed, and give leaders the comprehensive battlefield visibility required for decision advantage. The “right to integrate” hackathon made clear that open collaboration is essential to keeping pace with today’s operational demands, and that open, documented interfaces are the path forward.

A Monthlong Sprint to Integration

Operation Jailbreak was a structured interoperability sprint pairing the Army with defense contractors. The intent was to break down walls between disparate military platforms — from sensors to C2 nodes — and enable real-time data exchange across systems that were never designed to communicate. Participants were asked to prove that a system, whether a radar, electro-optical camera, or acoustic sensor, could integrate with IBCS-M through a published, documented interface.

The goal was simply “integration,” but that was the only thing about it that was simple. For nearly a month, engineers developed, iterated, and tested their APIs until each interface met the Army’s integration standards. By the end of the sprint, participants had validated open interfaces across multiple Army systems, opened previously closed platforms, and demonstrated tools that let teams expose and connect new interfaces rapidly. That created the groundwork to extend these open, API-based solutions across the Army’s broader inventory.

Red Hat participated throughout the event and saw firsthand the collaborative, proactive energy that every participant — from government to industry alike — brought to the table. Working directly with multiple participating companies, Red Hat performed application container security scanning using Red Hat Quay and Red Hat Advanced Cluster Security for Kubernetes to deliver detailed vulnerability reports. This information helped strengthen each team’s security posture heading into the next phases of Operation Jailbreak. Red Hat also helped develop a reference architecture built on Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform, a model for centralized, security-focused software development that shows what “good” looks like for a secure application delivery pipeline with a consistent maturity level.

Beyond the Army: The CJADC2 Challenge

Operation Jailbreak solved an Army problem, but the problem isn’t unique to the Army. Every service and allied force faces the same challenge: sensors, platforms, and command systems that can’t share data.

The Department of Defense’s long-term vision for solving this, Combined Joint All-Domain Command and Control (CJADC2), imagines every sensor and system across all services and allied nations connected into a single decision-making network. That vision has spent years in PowerPoint presentations, but Operation Jailbreak provided the first proof that it can be built, one open interface at a time.

This is only the beginning. Army leaders have already signaled that future sprints will extend this approach to joint forces, allies, and partners, and the requirement for open, documented interfaces is being written into future acquisition contracts. The Army even stood up an API marketplace — a first for the Department of Defense — where vendors and government teams can publish and document interfaces, reinforcing that open, reusable APIs are becoming standard practice rather than a one-off exercise.
